Brewing and Malting Barley Research Institute

The Brewing and Malting Barley Research Institute (BMBRI) brings pre-commercialized information from brewers and maltsters to plant breeders, detailing the most desired traits required in malt barley. Since its formation in 1948, it has also actively participated in developing malting barley varieties. Located in Winnipeg, its membership includes maltsters and brewing companies.  BMBRI’s technical committee influences which new varieties will be registered prior to commercialization. It has developed a Collaborative Test that new breeding lines must pass before being put forward for registration. The Institute awards research grants to approved breeding projects; these funds help secure matched funding from other government and industry programs.
