Canada-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement

Formally announced by the federal government in its March 2012 Budget, this agreement has been in development for some time. Japan is Canada’s second largest malt export market, importing 150,000 tonnes of Canadian malt each year – fully 40 percent of Japan’s total malt import market. MIAC is working for the elimination of all Japanese tariff and non-tariff import barriers. For example, the current over-quota import tariff for malt into Japan is presently $250 per metric tonne.
